A wonderful vintage cottage charm with details all the way round including a thatched roof, windows, doors, textured walls and chimney. It holds a Stanhope – a lens at one end that when looked through towards light reveals a teeny two verse poem/song/hymn – “Bless this House “ by Helen Taylor/May Brahe, 1927. It became a popular hymn and later, a song released by artists such as Perry Como and Vera Lynn.
It has full British hallmarks on the bottom – London, 1964. The maker’s mark of a heart, quartered with initials capital F and capital M in opposing corners is for Fred Manshaw Ltd of Hatton Garden, London. The heart is thought to be a nod to Bleeding Heart Yard where they were originally based in the Hatton Garden area. The company has an interesting history which can be read at thevintagecompactshop.com’s excellent blog which I’d rather sign post than copy here.
It’s in very good vintage condition with light surface wear commensurate with age. The jump ring bale is not soldered. The image through the lens is very very difficult to photograph – apologies!
