A wonderful early nineteenth century rolled gold flat cut garnet, seed pearl and hair work brooch with pendant fitting (likely added later but not by us). Twelve beautiful oval flat cut almandine garnets surround 28 natural seed pearls which frame braided hair behind glass. Probably a mourning brooch as pearls were used to symbolise tears but could also have been a sentimental jewel.
In very good condition for its age. Wear to the gold commensurate with age, base metal underneath starting to show though round the edges of the stone settings at the back - not visible from the front. Wear and scratches to the gold, glass, pearls and garnets (one noticeable small chip to a garnet). One pearl has been replaced as it was missing. None of its wear detracts from the beauty of this piece, and mentioned only for utmost transparency.
Measures: 2.7cm x 2.3cm excluding loop and bale
